Product Characteristics

The donax clam — commonly known as conquilha — is a bivalve mollusc with a thin, slightly elongated shell and a truncated posterior end, giving it a distinctive, streamlined profile. The external shell surface ranges from yellowish-grey to brown, sometimes displaying subtle spots or markings arranged in radial or concentric bands.

When fully developed, the shell can reach approximately 3.5–4 cm in length. The interior of the valves is generally lighter in colour, often whitish, sometimes with faint violet tones near the umbo.

It inhabits sandy seabeds, rapidly burrowing itself when the tide recedes. Thanks to its strong, muscular foot, it is able to dig and re-bury itself efficiently, making it well adapted to coastal zones with wave action and changing tidal levels. As a filter feeder, it feeds on phytoplankton and suspended organic matter present in the water.

In gastronomy, the donax clam is prized for its delicate, mildly saline and fresh flavour. It is ideal for traditional seafood dishes or simply enjoyed in its natural state, where its tender texture and authentic marine character are fully revealed.
